In brief my research project revolves around youth and ideas about language use, identity and place in contemporary Sweden. It’s a truism that debates about what constitutes proper language use never just about language. They are always entangled with and articulate cultural images of the speakers that use them and the places where they are spoken.

Using ethnographic methods to collect data I study the negotiation of proper language use in an inner city high school as part of the structuring of youth identities and the moral order in the school.
