arXiv provides an open access digital repository of scientific papers in the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics and quantitative finance. Articles (known as preprints or e-prints) are submitted prior to publication, freely available for anyone to read.

Founded in 1991, arXiv is now maintained and operated by the Cornell University Library. Today arXiv is an important scholarly communication forum with increasing usage every year. During 2015, the repository saw 105,000 new submissions and over 139 million downloads from all over the world. Stockholm University researchers and students are among the main users with over 42,000 downloads 2015.

The Library is now a member institution providing financial support to arXiv.
